TB Blood Test vs TB Skin Test (Mantoux)
The blood test needs one visit, while the skin test needs two visits 48–72 hours apart. The blood test isn’t affected by a previous BCG vaccination, whereas the skin test can give a false positive after BCG. It also gives an objective lab result rather than a reading by eye, which is why most employers and the NHS now prefer it. QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus is the TB blood test widely used across the NHS.

TB Blood Test: FAQs
Do I need to fast?
No. You can eat and drink as normal before your TB blood test.
Does BCG affect the result?
No. Unlike the skin test, the QuantiFERON blood test isn’t affected by a previous BCG vaccination.
What if my result is positive?
A positive result doesn’t on its own mean active TB. Our clinician contacts you to explain what it means and the next steps with your GP.
How long do results take?
4–14 working days. Please avoid booking on the working day before a bank holiday.
Can I use it for a visa?
Some providers accept it and many need an approved clinic, so please check with yours before booking.
