Why test for syphilis?

• No obvious symptoms: Syphilis often causes no noticeable signs, yet it is serious if untreated.

• Protect others: Syphilis spreads through sex or from mother to baby in pregnancy. Testing stops further transmission and protects your partner or child. 

• Routine screening: We recommend testing if you have risk factors (new/unprotected partner, previous STI) or are pregnant. Annual or trimester screening is advised for pregnant people. 

 

How the syphilis blood test works?

• Blood antibody test: We take a small blood sample. Labs screen for syphilis antibodies (RPR/VDRL), then confirm positives with a specific treponemal test. 

• What a positive means: A confirmed positive test means you currently have or have had syphilis, so treatment is needed if it’s current. 

• No special prep: You can eat and drink normally before the test. No antibiotics or aspirin for 2 weeks prior is ideal.
