A Full Blood Count (FBC) is one of the most useful everyday blood tests. It looks at the three main types of cells in your blood – red cells, white cells and platelets – and can show signs of anaemia, infection, inflammation and some blood disorders. What it checks: • Red cells – haemoglobin, red cell count, haematocrit (HCT), MCV, MCH and MCHC, which show whether your blood carries oxygen well and help identify the type of any anaemia • White cells – total white cell count plus neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils, which reflect your immune system and can point to infection, allergy or inflammation • Platelets – the cells that help your blood clot Who it is for: anyone feeling unusually tired, weak, short of breath or pale, people who bruise easily or have heavy periods, anyone recovering from an illness, and people who have been asked by a doctor, employer or university for a recent FBC. If you are tired, consider adding iron (ferritin), vitamin B12 and folate, or choose our Silver Screen, which includes an FBC with kidney, liver and cholesterol checks. Your result: a clear report with clinician interpretation, explaining what each result means and whether anything needs follow-up with your GP. Sample: blood, taken at the clinic.
