Ferritin is the protein your body uses to store iron, so a ferritin blood test is the most direct way to see how much iron you have held in reserve. A low ferritin level means those reserves are running down. It is often the earliest sign of iron deficiency and can appear well before a full blood count shows anaemia. A raised level can point to iron overload, but ferritin also rises with inflammation, infection and some liver conditions, so a high result on its own is not specific and needs reading alongside your history. People commonly book this test when they are persistently tired or short of breath, after heavy periods, when following a vegetarian or vegan diet, as regular blood donors or endurance athletes, or to check whether iron supplements are working. No fasting is needed and you do not need a GP referral. We take a venous sample — a standard blood draw from the arm, not a finger-prick — at our CQC-registered clinic in Crewe or at partner clinics across the UK. Ferritin is one marker rather than a full picture, and it is often read alongside a full blood count. Both can be booked together. A result is not a diagnosis.
