GAD antibodies (also called Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase antibodies or GAD‑65 antibodies) are autoimmune markers. This test checks whether the immune system is mistakenly attacking certain cells in the body. What it is used for 1. Autoimmune diabetes (Type 1 or LADA) GAD antibodies are one of the main markers used to identify: Type 1 diabetes LADA (late‑onset autoimmune diabetes in adults) If GAD antibodies are positive, it means the immune system is attacking the insulin‑producing cells in the pancreas. 2. Autoimmune neurological conditions High levels can also appear in rare neurological autoimmune disorders, such as: Stiff‑person syndrome Autoimmune epilepsy Cerebellar ataxia These conditions are uncommon.
