Gonorrhoea Test: Gonorrhoea Rapid Blood Testing

Gonorrhoea is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It spreads through unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex and can infect the genitals, throat or rectum. Many people have no noticeable symptoms (50% of women, 10% of men), which means the infection can be passed on unknowingly. Untreated gonorrhoea may lead to serious health problems (infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, etc.). Regular testing is therefore crucial for anyone at risk of STIs.

Symptoms of Gonorrhoea

If symptoms do occur, they typically appear 1–2 weeks after exposure. Common signs include:

  • Women: Yellow/green vaginal discharge, burning or pain during urination, pelvic or lower abdominal pain. (Menstrual irregularities or bleeding between periods are less common.)

  • Men: Pus-like discharge from the penis and a burning sensation when peeing. Swollen or tender testicles may also occur.

  • Rectal/Throat: If gonorrhoea infects the anus or throat (from anal/oral sex), it can cause anal discharge, itching or discomfort and/or a sore throat.

  • Many people have no symptoms. If you have any symptoms or a partner with gonorrhoea, get tested right away.

Gonorrhoea Testing Methods

Gonorrhoea is diagnosed by laboratory analysis of samples. Easy Medical Centre uses modern DNA-based tests (PCR/NAAT) on urine or swabs for high accuracy. Sample collection options include:

  • Men (penis): A quick urine sample is usually sufficient. (In some cases a urethral swab is taken.)

  • Women (vagina): A vaginal or cervical swab is used (often self-collected). A urine sample is also acceptable in many cases.

  • Oral/Anal: If exposure occurred, we take swabs from the throat or rectum. These extra swabs ensure an infection is not missed.

Our PCR tests are highly sensitive. Results are typically available in 1–3 days, giving you fast answers.

Why Test for Gonorrhoea?

  • Asymptomatic risk: Most people with gonorrhoea don’t feel ill. Regular screening catches hidden infections that would otherwise spread silently.

  • Prevent complications: Untreated gonorrhoea can lead to infertility, chronic pain, or ectopic pregnancy. Early detection allows prompt treatment.

  • STD screening: If you have a new sexual partner, multiple partners, or condomless sex, annual STI checks (including gonorrhoea) are recommended. Women planning pregnancy should also get tested.

Testing too early can give a false negative. It’s best to wait about 2 weeks after last exposure to allow the infection to be detectable.

Easy Medical Centre Gonorrhoea Rapid Testing Services

At Easy Medical Centre, you can order an at-home test kit or visit one of our clinics. Our private testing is discreet, confidential and does not require a GP referral. For example, our Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea PCR test uses either a urine sample or swab.

Key benefits of our Gonorrhoea Rapid Testing Services:

  • Home Test Kits: We mail you a free home testing kit. Men provide a urine sample and women a vaginal swab. You return the sample by post; results are available online in just days. This option offers privacy and convenience.

  • Clinic Appointments: We have multiple UK locations (Crewe, Nottingham, etc.) where you can get tested in person. Appointments are same-day/urgent if needed. All tests are processed by certified labs with results in 1–3 days.

  • Expert Care: Our medical team guides you through testing and follows best-practice sexual health protocols. If your test is positive, we immediately advise on next steps and treatment.

Easy Medical Centre’s home STI test kit includes all supplies and clear instructions. You collect the sample yourself, seal it in the provided container, and post it back to our lab. The entire process is confidential and straightforward.

Results and Treatment for Gonorrhoea Rapid Blood Testing

  • Fast results: When you test at our clinic or via home kit, results usually come back in 1–3 business days. You can view them securely online or over the phone.

  • Treatment: Gonorrhoea is treated with a single dose of an effective antibiotic (often an injection). In some cases an oral antibiotic is given. Treatment is free at sexual health clinics (NHS) or via our private service, and symptoms typically clear within days.

  • Follow-up: Your doctor will advise a test-of-cure about 1–2 weeks after treatment. Do not have oral, anal or vaginal sex until both you and your partner(s) have completed treatment and repeat tests confirm the infection is gone. This prevents re-infection and spread.

If your test is positive, we also help notify partners (anonymously if preferred) and advise on further STI screening.

Our partner laboratory is referred to RCLS, UKAS Accredited Lab 9329.

Gonorrhoea Test: FAQs

How do they test for gonorrhoea?

Modern testing uses a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) on samples. Typically, men give a urine sample and women provide a vaginal/cervical swab. If the infection might be in the throat or rectum (from oral/anal sex), swabs from those sites are taken as well. Both clinic and home-kit tests use these methods.

What are common symptoms of gonorrhoea?

Many infected people have no symptoms. When symptoms appear, they often include: in women, yellow/green vaginal discharge and pain/burning on peeing; in men, pus-like penile discharge and painful urination. Rectal infection can cause itching or discharge, and throat infection may cause a sore throat. A rash of hives is not a typical sign of gonorrhoea – skin welts usually indicate a different issue.

Can I test for gonorrhoea at home?

Yes. Free and private home STI test kits are available. These kits contain everything needed to self-collect a sample (urine for men, a vaginal swab for women) and mail it to the lab. Results come back in a few days online or by phone. (If you have symptoms, a clinic visit may be advised instead of a home kit.)

Can gonorrhoea cause hives?

No. Gonorrhoea itself does not cause hives (allergic skin welts). Hives are generally an allergic reaction unrelated to STIs. If you notice hives or a rash, see a doctor to determine the cause.
